ROHS Certification
ROHS Certification
RoHS Certification is a product-level compliance standard (EEE) aimed at ensuring the safe use of electrical and electronic equipment by regulating hazardous substances. Based on the RoHS Directives, this certification mandates the elimination or reduction of specific hazardous chemicals in electronic and electrical devices to safeguard both the environment and human health. To comply with RoHS regulations, all products must be monitored and tested for the presence of prohibited substances.
The restricted substances include Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg), Cadmium (Cd), Hexavalent Chromium (Cr), Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB), and Polybrominated Diphenyl Ether (PBDE). The RoHS compliance certificate prohibits or limits the use of these dangerous substances in electrical or electronic equipment (EEE). The RoHS Directives ensure that hazardous compounds are not introduced into products, or if necessary, are kept within the permissible limits.
Process
- Document Review: Evaluate the necessary documents and confirm the extent of required testing. Bills, material declarations for each product and component, assembly drawings, conformity certifications, test results, and compliance files are uploaded to the company’s network.
- Testing: Testing begins with assessing the presence of the 10 restricted RoHS chemicals below the RoHS threshold through on-site or XRF testing, lab phthalate solvent extraction testing, or both.
- Manufacturing Process Inspection: On-site inspections of all relevant manufacturing processes are conducted to ensure RoHS conformity. The process includes a detailed factory inspection, quality control checks, and a comparison of products with restricted substances under supervision.
- Annual Follow-ups: To maintain compliance, auditing firms perform yearly follow-ups that may include product sampling.
- Licensing: After the successful audit conclusion, a RoHS certificate, also known as a Certificate of Conformity or Declaration of Conformity, is issued.
Cost of RoHS Certification
The cost of RoHS certification depends on the size of the company and the industry. It ensures traceability for product safety and limits the use of hazardous substances.
